Hurricane head for Azores and then the British Isles
Hurricane Gordon is breaking all the rules of meteorology and fighting northeast through the high ltitudes and increasingly cold seas. As it does it has intensified to an 80kt Hurricane and is expected to infact be even more intense that that. It is expected to slowly turn extra-tropical but glide by the Azores with sustained 70KT winds before turning north and crashing into Southern Ireland with 60KT sustained winds.

The NHC have already issued Azores with a tropical storm warning the first time this has EVER been issued.

As storm glides north against all rules the GFDL model indicated CAT 3 winds awhen the storm is halfway between the Azores and Britain.

ANALYSES FROM THE FSU CYCLONE PHASE SPACE DIAGRAMS SUGGEST THAT ALL
NUMERICAL MODELS TRANSITION GORDON TO A VIGOROUS EXTRATROPICAL
CYCLONE IN ABOUT 24 HOURS. DUE TO THE RATHER RESILIENT NATURE OF
GORDON...HOWEVER...THIS TRANSITION MAY BE DELAYED SLIGHTLY.
ON THE FORECAST TRACK...THE SYSTEM WOULD PASS VERY NEAR OR OVER THE
AZORES IN 24 TO 36 HOURS. BECAUSE OF THE UNCERTAINTY IN THE TIMING
OF THE EXTRATROPICAL TRANSITION...A TROPICAL STORM WATCH IS ISSUED
FOR THE AZORES. HOWEVER...REGARDLESS OF THE EXACT STRUCTURE OF THE
CYCLONE...STRONG WINDS ARE LIKELY TO BE EXPERIENCED IN THE AZORES.

Gee, thanks a bunch pal. If it hits Buck House, it'll take out a lot of homes on its way there... and have you any idea how much debris that place would let loose?
Have a nice day.

Re: Hurricane head for Azores and then the British Isles
If one looks at the Atlantic ocean temperatures it is possible that Gordon could hit the Azores at hurrican strength.

The point being that Gordon is in 76-80 degree water and only would be in sub 75 degree water for a very short time given its fast forward speed.

Given the Azores' latitude the remnants would be more apt to hit Spain and Portugal rather than the UK.

Unclear what types of storms the Azores get in the winter, but I doubt 80mph sustained would cause that much damage

Re: Hurricane head for Azores and then the British Isles
Gordon possibly hits Azores as Cat 1

Gordon is moving on a more easterly track and should remain that way through Tuesday. Gordon remains over very warm water. However, the system will start to move over cooler water over the next 24 hours. As it does, it will start to lose its tropical characteristics. However, past storms in this area of the Atlantic have maintained their tropical character longer due to the warmer-than-normal water temperatures. So, this system could still be a full-blown tropical system, either a weak hurricane or strong tropical storm as it affects the Azores later tomorrow and tomorrow night. After that, it will move over much cooler water and weaken further.

What would be cool would be a hurricane entering the Mediterranean. I think this would be a first and kind of interesting as the water is relatively warm

So 26-27 is 80F so slightly under this in the Western Mediterranean, but warm enough in the eastern mediterranean.
