Dean -- Iowa User ID: 208047 United States 03/21/2007 05:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is my personal experience and observation that smoking increases intellectual awareness and protects in other ways, too. It does have a calming effect on the nerves. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 212071Yup. Smoking has BOTH a calming effect, if you're hyper, and an invigorating effect, if you're in a down mood. This has been known for over 40 years (reported in psychology magazines). Smoking also has been reported, by researchers, to reduce the frequency and severity of asthma (regardless of what the media says about second-hand smoke). In addition, smoking greatly reduces the severity and duration of most forms (maybe all forms) of influenza -- also reported by researchers. Lung cancer is NOT caused by smoking -- it's caused by a virus that attacks weakened lungs. Smoking can weaken lung function -- but ONLY when the diet is very low in fats, especially saturated fats (meat, eggs, butter, coconut oil) and high in polyunsaturated fats (soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, sunflower seed oil, etc.). The same fat combination also produces obesity, heart disease and many other degenerative diseases. The highest rate of smoking in the US occurred in the 1920's through 1940's (some say the flu epidemic in 1918 was cut off because so many people started smoking) but there was practically no lung cancer (except for coal miners' black-lung disease). The increase in lung, and all other, cancers started in the 1950's when the low-fat craze took hold and food manufacturers switched from using animal fats and coconut oil to using soybean and corn oil. This change in fats also reduce the natural flavor of foods so more MSG had to be added (McDonald's spent millions of dollars on research into flavoring to add to their french-fries when they switched from lard to vegetable oil). |
