Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
I hear this every night. Only indoors. It's between a bottom E and the F on the bass string of a standard tuned 6-string guitar. I think it's around 41hz. It would be handy to get the exact frequency. BTW it stopped when I used the guitar to experiment with matching the sound.

The tinnitus "solution" is basically saying "We have a word for it but we have no idea what it is." This is the name given to all sounds heard than can not be traced to an external source. If you go to a doctor or an ENT specialist, the only thing you're coming home with is; "It's tinnitus, you probably don't remember the damage to your ears when it was done. It might go away, it might stay for life. There's no way of knowing."

Keep looking, someone will get it.

I can't shake the feeling that the bones of my skull are being vibrated and the "sound" is a by-product.

Holler back.

Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
I live in Mountain View CA and sleep with the windows at least cracked year round. Last summer this awful sound woke my husband and I up in the middle of the night several times. Once, I even wandered around outside to see if I could hear where it was coming from. A deep thrumming hum you can almost feel more than hear. Last night I awoke to it, and to an empty bed. This morning my husband said he had moved into a different room to try to escape the sound. So we both were woken by it independently. It was the first time since last summer we had heard it. I decided to do some searching this morning to see if anyone else had heard it (I was joking that if I googled it and didn't find anything it was caused by alien research google must be doing, since they are based here :D)

It doesn't sound or feel like any sound I've ever heard, not freeway vibrations or something electric...

We live next to Moffett Field and thought maybe it's some sort of weird thing in their wind tunnels or something...

It's an awful awful noise and I wish I knew where it was coming from and how to get it to stop. Hopefully it will stay away tonight.

Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
Been hearing this sound for a few years now. I live in Clarks Summit, PA. We recently moved 8 miles away and I can still hear it (Still in Clarks Summit). It usually happens late at night to early morning. Usually between 1:00 - 3:00 A.M. It's actually happening right now. It comes from outside. When I first heard the sound a few years ago... I thought it was a UFO. I would go outside where the sound was higher... Look around and above my house. But could never pinpoint it's location. At one point (In my old house) I asked a neighbor if I could call him to come over when it happened next. I wanted to make sure that it wasn't just me. I did and he could also hear it. One thing everyone may want to consider is that there may be something that we all have in common. Maybe an experience, or an incident. Anything unusual that may have happened in your life just before your first experience with the humming began. It seems that the time in which everyone first starts to experience this are spuratic. The sound I hear is much like the humming in the first "Paranormal Activity". I first saw this movie after I had been hearing the humming for awhile. When I heard it on the movie, it instantly gave me a chill.

Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
I live in Charlotte NC but began hearing this hum in my left ear right after I made an 8 hour drive from Columnus Ohio to Charlotte. At first I thought it was the sound of the car's tires and I was hearing like a ghost echo from hearing that noise continually for an extended period.. It continued for few days and then went away. Now about 10 days later it is back. I was on a long phone call with computer tech support when it started again. It is driving me insane and I am also worried that there is something physically wrong in my head. I woke last night with a bad dream and then started to worry that I have some kind of brain tumor or something. Has anyone been to a doctor to see what explanation they might have for this weird hum?

I have it too....been noticing it for about a year. It's a hum, not a ring, both ears and it's constant. It's always there, wherever I go. Sounds like energy or electricity. I only notice it when all is quiet. No one else in my family hears it. I am used to it now. No headaches and in perfect health.

I am hearing the same sound in Hillarys, Perth, Western Australia. I moved to the suburb about 9 months ago and can hear it during the early hours of the morning some nights. It's sounds like a diesels motor or truck idling off in the distance. The sound sometimes comes in waves or will cut in and out, say on for 10secs, then cut out for a 2secs. My wife can't hear it and the intensity changes when I move around the house or go outside.

Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
About a week ago I awoke and couldn't quite fall back asleep. There was this noise that sounded like humming, almost like a fan. I have two on here every day/night to keep the room cool as the sun fills it for the first hours of the day. It seemed to be above that sound and mostly in my left ear. A few days in a row I had a massive headache that wouldn't go away along with jaw pain(my hinge is slightly off since I was 10 due to a very long fall where I landed on my feet and jarred every joint). I've also had a light case of Bell's Palsy a few years back that affected my hearing on my right side. When I got the headaches I kinda attributed it to my monthly friend but for two nights in row now I've awoken to the humming sound and while it used to go away when the world woke up around me in the morning (traffic noise, fans, kids, husband, radios, tvs) it hasn't today. I read the site about the phenomena of humming but it doesn't give me too much insight.

I will tell you I'm very sensitive to sound. I can hear very low and very high sounds. I've just been more sensitive lately. According to a site that checks levels I'm around 20 years old LOL! I wish! But I really am sensitive unless I'm around a fan, running water (rain), or snow static (radio or tv). Usually a fan drowns out everything and this humming is above it. I also noticed that talking will make my head vibrate.

In having B.P. I'm very vigil about checking for signs that it might return. I've been taking my vitamins and trying to enjoy my vacation from work. I don't think this is that. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else has been hearing this in the tri-state area and if so for how long. Do you think it's a precursor to something big, like an earthquake? Has anyone reading this experienced humming and had something big happen near you after you heard it?

Thank you.

Same thing as many others...almost all in one ear. Ear plugs help some. Inadd ition to the hum, i feel almost a pressure.

Usually starts around 3:30 in the morning. Wakes me up e ery night now - been going on for a couple months. Doesn't seem to go away when i go to other bedrooms in my house. I''ve walked around outside trying to see where it comes from, but cant tell. The additional noise seems to somehow make it go away.

Really starting to drive me crazy..wish i knew what was going on.

Wow, I could have wrote this myself! I am in Toronto, ON CANADA and am suffering the exact same thing--a constant humming noise that seems to begin at about 3-3:30am and goes on for hours, not ending till about 8-9am. The sound doesn't happen EVERY night, just on and off here and there - I'd say about a few nights every 2 months (that's when I've noticed it/it's woken me up, anyway. Could be more often, I guess...). Also usually seems to happen on weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun, with the occasional Thursday)...

I've even recorded it and uploaded it here (.mp3 format) if anyone wants to hear it and compare:

[link to www.2shared.com]

I do NOT have tinnitus (constant ringing in my ears/hearing damage), this is only sometimes, in the middle of the night. I also do not have any mental disorders, and am healthy as can be! I do live in a busy area (which includes a shopping mall) who I have complained to time and time again, but I can't even be sure it's the cause. The noise is extremely hard to cover (I have tried white noise and ear plugs with no luck--they work well for most other noises, but they don't seem to cover this frequency). It is safe to say that this noise is slowly driving me nuts....I really hope I can pinpoint it soon and get it to stop! :(

Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
Like so many of the "hum crowd" I was intent on finding the external source of the unwanted noise, a low frequency hum. It was August 29, 2012 when I first started to document the intermittent on-off episodes. The hum could be described as blowing across the top of a bottle or or the darth vader sword. It never varied in pitch and would sometimes seemingly go away for periods of time. Of course it was most noticeable during those times of solitude with no other sound sources. It was in my left ear only, a fact which should have indicated the source was not external.

Convinced it had to be external I reported the house hum in a handyman forum and ignored the respondent who suggested tinnitus. However, after 10 days or so I began to explore this possibility.

Long story short: Upon reading aspirin is capable of causing and diminishing the noise I began taking 81mg every other day. Within 10 days the hum was fading and by 2 two weeks it was gone. In order to confirm aspirin responsible I stopped taking it and within 5 days the hum was beginning to return.

I then started the aspirin regime once again and the low frequency hum in my left air was gone after 10 days, with the only difference being a daily dose of 81mg - not every other day.

For those who may want to experiment using aspirin as a noise management remedy I suggest you research SOAE (spontaneous oto-acoustic emissions), also known as OAE and SOAEs. Some classify this noise source as tinnitus while others do not, but this condition involves cochlear involvement, and CAN be measured by sensitive instruments. Studies suggest a mere 3 or 4 percent of those with ear noises have SOAE, which frequently respond to aspirin treatment. The amount of aspirin required to stop the noise varies, but a conservative, low dose approach is suggested.

If your hum is due to SOAE you could experience relief shortly after beginning an aspirin regime. I suggest starting at a low dosage of 81mg per day so as not to risk significantly compound existing tinnitus - if you do not have SOAE. You will find an abundance of information on this topic by researching ASPIRIN SOAE. I can be contacted at grkow at aol. If you are in a hurry to test the aspirin treatment you may want to try a full dose (320mg) daily.

I'm in Southern California as well and I have been hearing it since last fall. It occurs around the clock without stopping. Fortunately it is masked by other noises much of the day. However, when the sounds of human daily routines fade or cease, the wobble and drone is audible. I live in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Re: What the FUCk is this HUMMing SOund
For the past month or so I have been hearing a very low level humming sound. No one else hears it and I'm starting to wonder WTF is going on. I hear it mostly at night and early morning, because I'm guessing it's the quiet time of the day (night).

This humming is not constant, it sounds like an electric motor trying to cycle. I've turned off all the curcuits in the house so I know it's not from within the house. I can even hear it when I'm out in the woods or at the neighbors house.
It's really starting to bug me out!

And no it's not tinnitus.
 Quoting: bugging out 433091

There are some things "they" are doing with the electrical systems that might be doing it. I had the same thing happen about a year and a half ago. I mean, after researching it, I did start taking magnesium, which was supposed to help, and it did go away, but I don't think it went away because of the magnesium.

There is some energy-related activity going on, whether it's cable underground or whatever, that some people can hear. Sometimes enough people can hear it to fight the source. Other times, you may just need to get used to it. Try and research various coping mechanisms, like telling yourself it won't hurt you, it's just annoying. And keep looking for more answers! God bless you, and I pray that you find a solution soon.

Think of the sound a donkey makes... "hee-haw" .... now substitute the words with pure, low tones... 2 of them. Sometimes one is sustained longer than the second tone, sometimes not....

I've heard them when the power was completely out in our area, so nothing to do with appliances in the house or surroundings. We do have a cell tower about a mile away as the crow flies.

Occasionally, it will modulate wildly, rapid fire sort of effect. Other times, it is slow and steady.

Easiest to hear in the bathroom (pipes), and bedroom (inner spring mattress), but I've heard in many rooms, different times of day (if it's quiet). I've heard in my yard and in my car with windows and doors shut. I've even heard them at a friends house who lives 2 miles away.

Fortunately, my ceiling fan drowns them out, so I can ignore in the summer... otherwise, it's a real pain in the arse.

I have herd it myself at yes its at night or early morning never could figure out what it was. Perhaps the drown of tires on the highway 15+km away or the train siting on the tracks with its engines running... I could never hear it outside and it was most load close to the windows as I would guess they were vibrating. I looked into this phenomenon and have read it is not sound we are hearing but rather low frequency electrical or harmonic wave possibly from earth itself. It is not a sound we hear but rather vibration we are perceiving as sound

I reside in northern California by Folsom Lake in the foothills. I have been hearing this since sometime last spring. I am hearing it now, at 11:03a.m., I heard it last night and this morning, I hear it daily and ranging from lower intensity to higher and at night.

I too sense I hear it more right ear which puzzled me but the nature of it may lie in the answer in how we are hearing it. I had had tinnitus since the 80s from two head injuries, breaking two windshields with my head over a two year span.

My tinnitus is very active and loud but does not interfere with my experiencing the 'hum'. I say experience because that seems more apt. I thought due to the sensing of vibration along with this that if I put my ear against the door I would feel vibration but that is always absent.

Yes, it wakes me up as well. Only once did my husband ask me about two a.m. "do you hear that"? I said yes and he said he thought our generator must be running, that we must have lost power. I went and checked and it was not and told him that is what I hear constantly.

I rejected the boring due to how long this has been ongoing and think it may likely lie in geoactivity dealing with 'tension' in the undrlying granite or something like that???

I do have a close transmitting, receiving, 90someodd foot tower that had more stuff added to it this year??????? I had heard that 'hum' but it is nothing like this and if you get around it you ware warned to stay 15' away from it.

I believe I've posted on this thread before. I've heard this sound for over a year now. Only notice at nice when all else is still. First, thought it was my house. So I went through and checked all the likely offenders (AC, hot water heater, frig, etc.) and turned up nothing. Next, went out side and could not pinpoint a source (i.e., neighbor's AC, pool pump, etc.). Thought it was local construction, but that over and done with yet it still persists. Maybe the tram, but I hear it long after closing hours.

The hum stopped for a while (several months, at least I was sleeping through it), but it's back. Heard it last night around 2:45 am.
