Baxter admits sending live avian flu viruses to subcontractor --Baxter admits contaminated seasonal flu product contained live bird flu virus

The company that released contaminated flu virus material from a plant in Austria confirmed Friday that the experimental product contained live H5N1 avian flu viruses.

And an official of the World Health Organization's European operation said the body is closely monitoring the investigation into the events that took place at Baxter International's research facility in Orth-Donau, Austria.

"At this juncture we are confident in saying that public health and occupational risk is minimal at present," medical officer Roberta Andraghetti said from Copenhagen, Denmark.

"But what remains unanswered are the circumstances surrounding the incident in the Baxter facility in Orth-Donau."

The contaminated product, a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses and unlabelled H5N1 viruses, was supplied to an Austrian research company. The Austrian firm, Avir Green Hills Biotechnology, then sent portions of it to sub-contractors in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany.

The contamination incident, which is being investigated by the four European countries, came to light when the subcontractor in the Czech Republic inoculated ferrets with the product and they died. Ferrets shouldn't die from exposure to human H3N2 flu viruses.

Public health authorities concerned about what has been described as a "serious error" on Baxter's part have assumed the death of the ferrets meant the H5N1 virus in the product was live. But the company, Baxter International Inc., has been parsimonious about the amount of information it has released about the event.

On Friday, the company's director of global bioscience communications confirmed what scientists have suspected.

"It was live," Christopher Bona said in an email.

The contaminated product, which Baxter calls "experimental virus material," was made at the Orth-Donau research facility. Baxter makes its flu vaccine - including a human H5N1 vaccine for which a licence is expected shortly - at a facility in the Czech Republic.

People familiar with biosecurity rules are dismayed by evidence that human H3N2 and avian H5N1 viruses somehow co-mingled in the Orth-Donau facility. That is a dangerous practice that should not be allowed to happen, a number of experts insisted.

Accidental release of a mixture of live H5N1 and H3N2 viruses could have resulted in dire consequences.

While H5N1 doesn't easily infect people, H3N2 viruses do. If someone exposed to a mixture of the two had been simultaneously infected with both strains, he or she could have served as an incubator for a hybrid virus able to transmit easily to and among people.

That mixing process, called reassortment, is one of two ways pandemic viruses are created.

There is no suggestion that happened because of this accident, however.

WESTWOOD -- A man who staged a marathon standoff with police near Federal Building pleaded not guilty Monday to threatening to blow up the White House.

Joseph Moshe is charged with making a false bomb threat and attempted criminal threats.

Moshe was arrested late Thursday after a more than eight-hour standoff at Veteran Avenue south of Wilshire Boulevard, near the Westwood Federal Building.

After several refusals to surrender to officials, Moshe withstood four rounds of tear gas tossed through his car window before officers fired a taser gun at him.

Police pulled Moshe from the car's driver seat and took him into custody.

During the course of the standoff, police did not know if the man was armed, police Lt. Ruben de la Torre said.

Moshe is suspected of calling a police dispatch number Wednesday and making threatening statements about the White House.

Neighbors who did not want to be identified said Moshe "sounds like he could be dangerous," but he has never caused any significant trouble for them.

Darrel Wayne Mohler of Silver Springs, Fla., was charged Friday with two counts of rape stemming from 1986.

Court documents say the 72-year-old suspect was charged in Lafayette County, Missouri. Authorities say they don't know where is. It's not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.

Five other members of the Mohler family were charged earlier this week with several felonies, including forcible sodomy, rape with a child younger than 12 and use of a child in a sexual performance.

The others charged include Darrel Mohler's 77-year-old brother, Burrell Edward Mohler Sr. of Independence, and Burrell Edward Mohler's four adult sons.

The allegations - including bestiality, forcing children into fake marriages with relatives and making an 11-year-old have an abortion - date from 1988 to 1995.

The men are being held on cash bonds ranging from $30,000 to $75,000. Their next court hearing is scheduled for Nov. 17.

"There has been an indication that there are body or bodies in numerous locations," Lafayette County Sheriff Kerrick Alumbaugh said Wednesday, although he would not say whose bodies they might be.

Cpl. Bill Lowe of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said Thursday that about 50 law enforcement officials are involved in the case, and that several leads have come in since the arrests Tuesday.

"It's 55 acres, so it's quite a bit of land," Lowe said. "We're still searching the area and doing lead follow-ups. We're getting substantial amount of leads that we need to track down and verify."

Alumbaugh earlier pleaded for the public's help, saying investigators "believe that there are other victims out there" and that the public can provide more information.

"The case has taken 100 turns since our last news conference," Alumbaugh said Thursday. He wouldn't discuss what, if anything, investigators have found on the property, except to say that authorities may have another suspect. He wouldn't elaborate.

On Thursday afternoon, crews dug with a backhoe in front of a garage on the property. The excavation previously had taken place about 200 yards from a house in a wooded area.

Authorities said a 26-year-old woman came forward to investigators in mid-August with allegations of sexual abuse that began in the 1980s and continued until about 1995. A probable cause statement released by the Lafayette County prosecutor's office says five other siblings of the woman have accused all five men of abuse, but it's unclear if all the siblings were claiming to be victims.

"Each of the victims is being interviewed, and we're still collecting all of that," Lowe said Thursday.

As PROMED reports, the contamination has been discovered when ferrets at a laboratory in the Czech Republic died after being inoculated with vaccine made from the samples early this month.



"The material came from Deerfield, Illinois-based Baxter, which reported the incident to the Austrian Ministry of Health, Sigrid Rosenberger, a ministry spokeswoman, said today in a telephone interview", the network-alert-system is quoting.



"This was infected with a bird flu virus," Rosenberger said. "There were some people from the company who handled it."

Evidence for the global threat comes from China, where a 2 year old girl has been confirmed to be infected with bird flu in the northern Shanxi Province, as government officials said last Saturday.


The child was found ill on 7th of January in the central Hunan province - the little patient still is in critical condition.

According to the test result of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the girl had been tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

On the other site of the globe, the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection last week, the case being a 21 month old girl Kerdasa District.

“Infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus was diagnosed by PCR at the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory and subsequently confirmed by the U. S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) laboratories”, reports the special wire PROMED.


According to PROMED, investigations into the source of her infection indicate a recent history of contact with sick and dead poultry - 23 similar cases in Egypt have been fatal up to date.

Latest surveillance data coming through the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) from virologists and clinicians indicates that the influenza A(H3N2) virus is the predominant strain in Europe so far this season (2008/2009). Based on the data published by ECDC the pharmaceutical company Roche confirms that the oral antiviral Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is fully active against influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B, which currently comprise 94 percent of circulating viruses in Europe this year. Tamiflu resistance reported in the 2008-2009 influenza seasons is confined to H1N1. No resistance has been seen with other circulating seasonal viruses - H3N2 and influenza B.

Is the NZ Ministry of Health Lying
about the H1N1 Vaccine?

The following exchange between the NZ Ministry of Health and Jane Burgermeister strongly suggests that The Hon Mr Tony Ryall has been factually incorrect in the most serious way possible in his answers to questions about the H1N1 vaccine. Moreover, he might well have lied about circumstances surrounding the NZ govt's purchase of the vaccine from Baxter International, the company that contaminated the Seasonal Flu Vaccine with LIVE BIRD FLU VIRUS.

Please give this your urgent attention. We believe that there is no issue more serious than that of toxic vaccines being injected into the people of this country, and the UNTESTED, TOXIC (Mercury, Squalene, Polysorbate 80, etc) H1N1 vaccines must never be permitted to be administered to New Zealanders.

Around half of all doctors, nurses and other health professionals worldwide are now refusing to get vaccinated with the H1N1 vaccines. They KNOW it's neither safe nor effective.

The company has cited proprietary information as the reason why it refuses to divulge details of the way that the contaminated material could have been produced in its Biosafety Level 3 laboratories where commercial vaccine production and clinical and experimental trials presumably take place under high biosecurity conditions to prevent just such a cross contamination. Can we accept this level of secrecy and this superficial investigation which seemed to just rubber stamp what Baxter had done when the contaminated virus posed a real threat to the health of the general public?

The Health Minister has given parliamentary answers that are full of contradictions.

For example, in an answer from May 20th, 2009 to the question: “What is the reason why no information has reached the public yet?”, Alois Stöger said “There was and is no reason to inform the general public about the contamination with the bird flu virus (Influenza A/H5N1) of a material produced for research purposes. There was no danger for the general public.”

But how can the Health Minister claim that there was no danger to the general public when 18 people in Vienna were treated preventatively for the bird flu in hospital and the incident nearly triggered a global bird flu pandemic according to experts and the media?




What do you say to the way WHO changed the pandemic criteria in April 27th loosening them to make a pandemic level 6 declaration possible?

What do you say to the fact that pharmaceutical executives sat as observers on a key vaccine advisory group of WHO that recommended mass vaccinations on July 7th?

It has come to my attention that you are a member of the executive board of WHO, as mentioned above.
