First off, Pnumonia is VERY similar to the flu - much of the same symptoms however most (not all) pnumonia is bacterial in nature. Atibiotics will work against a bacterial pnumonia BUT will not work against the flu !
With all of the H1N1 hype, there very well be some mis diagnosis, especially when the lungs are involved.
I'm not saying the H1N1 is not dangerous, but I think there is a bacterial infection (pnumonia) that disguises itself as the flu - hence the mortality rate.

Without treatment, about 50% of those with bubonic plague die. Almost all persons with pneumonic plague die if not treated. Treatment reduces the death rate to 5%.

ICU and in total life support with slow steady draining of bloody lung tissues, IV antibiotics oxygen and Ventilater etc.. a month of hospital ICU possible.. months before lungs heal up for good...patients need nebulizers afterward of albuteral ..a asthma med and copd meds .. it would take the highest level of skilled care at any ICU to survive this if lungs are bloody from plague ..long aslow total recuperation ...
