The United States has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world. The U.S. incarceration rate on December 31, 2008 was 754 inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents. The USA also has the highest total documented prison and jail population in the world.
Every year, more people are arrested than the entire combined populations of our 13 least populous states.
America incarcerates five times as many people per capita
as Canada and 7 times as many as most European democracies.
America spends approximately 100 billion dollars a year on
the criminal justice system, up from 12 billion in 1972.
In the early 70s, there were about 200,000 people locked up in the U.S. Today’s prison population of 1.8 million represents a growth of over 800% in the past 30 years.
In 2008, over 7.3 million people were on probation, in jail or prison, or on parole at year-end — 3.2% of all U.S. adult residents or 1 in every 31 adults."
