Pope Benedict XVI, international criminal, today responded to calls for his resignation (and prosecution) by saying he “would not be intimidated”.
Sounds like a challenge to me.
Today’s Times Online reports that Benedict issued his comments during Mass today:
A defiant Pope Benedict XVI indicated [Sunday] that he would not be intimidated by the clerical sex abuse crisis now engulfing the Church and threatening to undermine his authority.
Speaking during Palm Sunday Mass, he said that faith in Christ “helps lead us towards courage which does not allow us to be intimidated by the chatter of dominant opinions”.
Chatter of dominant opinions? People demanding justice is “chatter”?
He also said that Man can sometimes “fall to the lowest, vulgar levels” and “sink into the swamp of sin and dishonesty”.
Who can disagree with that? Unfortunately, it appears he was referring to people calling for his resignation, not his own actions and those of his underlings:
The pontiff did not refer directly to accusations over his handling of cases of paedophile priests, both as Archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982 and subsequently as head of doctrine at the Vatican. However, Vatican watchers said that his meaning was clear “in the current context”.
As is standard operating procedure for the Vatican, the denial is consistent across the board:
Father Federico Lombardi, the Pope’s spokesman, insisted that Pope Benedict had not been weakened by the allegations, which have led some to demand his resignation five years after he was elected.

Vatican officials maintain that the Pope has been active in combating clerical sex abuse, especially during his visit to the US in 2008 when he met several victims.
Ah, he met several victims (of tens of thousands) in 2008, and he wrote a letter to the Irish people insulting them for daring to complain about their children being raped by his priests in 2010. Yes, Maledict has really been working overtime combating child sexual abuse.
However, the Vatican is bracing itself for further revelations. The American Vatican watcher John Allen, of the National Catholic Reporter, said that the Munich diocese should release all its records of its dealings with paedophile priests rather than wait for the media to bring them to light.
That demand is just “chatter of dominant opinion” to Pope Maledict.
Others went farther, declaring their support for this criminal. For example:
The Archbishop of Westminster, the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, defended the Pope, saying that he was at the forefront of efforts to tackle the problem of clerical sex abuse. The archbishop told The Andrew Marr Show on BBC One: “The Pope will not resign. Frankly there is no strong reason for him to do so. In fact, it is the other way around. He is the one above all else in Rome that has tackled this thing head on.”
The Irish are planning an investigation to determine whether the Archdiocese’s failure to report child sexual abuse to the authorities constitutes criminal offenses. However, to date, no government has sought to go to the top.
This fish stinks from the head. Cut it off. BUST BENEDICT!
