Not many know this, but instead of getting rabies vaccines for your dogs/cats annually, you can get a titer test, which "is a laboratory test that measures the presence and amount of antibodies in blood."
If the necessary antibodies are present, the vet will then administer a certificate showing such, which, according to my vet, is a legal replacement for your state's rabies requirements.
My dog died from a rabies vaccination. She was 12 years old, very healthy. She developed severe seizures one week after her rabies vaccination and was dead a month later. After that happened, I educated myself on the detriments of rabies vaccines being administered to animals every year, and I was appalled at what I found out. I had no idea.
Be prepared, though. Titers are expensive, running approx. $250 per test. But, to me, it's worth it to spend on man's best friend who loves you unconditionally.
