Bureau of Land Management personnel made a surprise visit to the rig shortly before the fire. All the rig employees who would have seen what the BLM personnel did are dead. The resulting slick is allowed to grow for days before serious containment efforts are made. Now everybody's freaking out.
What's the payoff? With the next item on the legislative agenda being 'climate change'/'alternative energy', having a huge environmental story sets the tone. While Congress debates massive subsidies for energy companies, TV news will switch to continual stories of Gulf Coast disaster.
To people who have any expectation that some good might come of pending 'green' legislation, look at the big 'reform' legislative efforts of the past couple of years that preceded it: TARP, the 'Stimulus', ObamaCare. The common thread? Massive windfalls to Congress's corporate paymasters.
Especially after the 'Climate Gate' revelations, something shockingly enormous had to happen to shake a skeptical public into supporting what will certainly be another corporate rip-off/gov't power grab.
Discuss.
