Dear Congressman (or Senator)__________________:
I am writing today to express my absolute outrage at the handling of the ongoing disastrous and potentially catastrophic Gulf of Mexico oil spill by BP and to plead for your help. The government agencies given the task by the Obama Administration of oversight of the mitigation of this disaster thus far have seemingly given BP carte blanche to perform whatever activities they may choose. To date this has included three failed attempts to recover some portion of the oil from the source of the spill and the addition of dispersant both by aerial application and injection at the leak source. I might add here that not only is the addition of dispersant controversial among scientists as to whether or not it does more harm than good for the environment, adding it at the source has never been performed prior to this incident. These facts make it arguable that BP is doing what is in the best interest of BP and not what is in the best interest of the American people and the environment.

Furthermore, the Coast Guard, Department of the Interior, NOAA and other agencies involved have failed to conduct thorough investigations as to the quantity of oil leaking from the well and the location and extent of oil throughout the entire water column in a timely manner. It appears that they have relied on BP for this information, and clearly BP has distorted, misrepresented and withheld information from the day this disaster began. BP initially claimed that there was no significant leak, then that about 1000 barrels of oil per day were leaking, then, they said 5000 barrels per day, and lately they claim that it is impossible for anyone to know how much oil is leaking into the Gulf. A number of very credible scientists have produced estimates of the oil leak that range between 20,000 and 80,000 barrels per day. The only difficulty in producing an accurate calculation of the volume of oil leaking exists for the simple reason that BP has exclusive access to the site of the leak.

Congressman ________________, this is a very dire situation. This oil spill has the potential to negatively affect not only the livelihoods, but the health and wellbeing of hundreds of thousands if not millions of Americans. If this spill continues unabated much longer, the economic and environmental impact will be felt by all Americans. As soon as is possible an independent panel of experts not beholden to the companies involved should be assembled to make decisions regarding steps to be taken to stop the flow of oil. Action should be taken immediately to remove BP from their position of control of the efforts to stop the leak. Your prompt attention to this matter will not only be greatly appreciated, it is vital if the Gulf, and indeed the nation, are to avoid a cataclysmic disaster.

Sincerely,

Your name
