ABC News:
North Korea has threatened "full-scale war" after a South Korean investigation concluded a torpedo fired by one of the reclusive regime's submarines sunk one of its navy ships earlier this year.
South Korea says it has overwhelming evidence that a North Korean submarine fired the torpedo that sank the Cheonan in March, killing 46 sailors.
It said parts of the torpedo recovered from the scene off the Korean peninsula's west coast were compatible with a North Korean-made weapon South Korea secured seven years ago.
"There is no other plausible explanation," a joint civilian and military investigation report said.
The report's findings were swiftly backed by a White House statement which called the sinking an "act of aggression" and said it was "one more instance of North Korea's unacceptable behavior and defiance of international law."
The report was compiled by a multinational team, including five Australian Defence Force personnel.
The Yonhap news agency, which monitors North Korean media, said the North's National Defence Commission broadcast a statement describing the report as a "fabrication".
"We will take strong measures including full-scale war if sanctions against North Korea are imposed," Yonhap quoted the broadcast as saying.
The NDC, chaired by leader Kim Jong-Il, is the most powerful state organ in the communist North.
Its statement described the South's president Lee Myung-Bak as a "traitor".
In Seoul, Mr Lee vowed resolute counter-measures against North Korea in response to the report's findings.
Mr Lee's office says he has told Prime Minister Kevin Rudd by phone that North Korea must admit its wrongdoing in sinking the warship.
