Original Message Warden wouldn't let armed officer vote in Maine

November 1, 2010

BANGOR, Maine—The police chief in Bangor, Maine, has ended any discussion over whether officers can bring a gun to a polling place: Chief Ron Gastia says officers are encouraged to do their civic duty by voting. And he says his officers are trained never to relinquish their firearms.

Gastia spoke Monday after a longtime Bangor election warden refused to let a uniformed Bangor police officer vote because he wouldn't hand over his gun at a polling place.

Clerk Patti Dubois said Monday that the election officer won't be working the polls Tuesday.
