I live here in Minnesnowta. It took my husband and I two hours to dig our cars out of the snow yesterday. When we were finished we proceeded down the sidewalk to go inside and get warm. On the snowbank, I saw a bat on its stomach, shivering and breathing fast. I though for sure that it had broken its wing or was otherwise severely injured. I didn't want the poor thing to freeze to death out there(it was -13 with the wind chill). I got a broom and a dust pan and gently moved it onto the dust pan, covering it with the broom so it wouldn't fall and placed inside the porch. Now, the porch is warmer than the outside of course, so I figured it could die in a less frigid and uncomfortable place. I checked on the little guy (or gal) several times. Each time, the bat seemed more active and alert. After one hour or so, it started stretching its wings. It seemed to want to fly, so I opened the door and it flew away just as fine as can be. I guess it didn't have a broken wing as I'd suspected. Perhaps it was in a dark hollow tree and fell out? Maybe it flew into something and was stunned? Also, I thought bats hibernate in the winter. Isn't this so? If they do, what the heck was it doing out there, and in the daytime? Either way, I'm glad I was able to help it out. With so many bats dying off here from white nose disease, every healthy bat is important.
