[quote:Boatsmac:MV8xMzM1NjkxXzIxOTU4NzkyX0VCM0I5Nzk5] [quote:Mitheriel] I think that the magnetic pole is known to be static. Not form any book, but when I re-read this trail guide that I bought, it tells you how to determine your direction according to magnetic North in reference to grid North on the map, BUT the key is that they state that the difference is taken from a aproximate calculation based on readings from where it was at a certain date in the past. I can't link because its not online, and I can't quote because it would be immoral and I am drunk and too lazy to get the book and quote it word for word.
On a nautical chart, I am thinking that this has to do with variation, or deviation? Or that there is a "rose" in various locations on the charts because there is a change in the magnet pole (needle changes directions) throughout the oceans floors. Sorry, been a while for me. I would hope a qualified navigation type of person would hit this thread, they would be able to answer all the questions being asked here. Quarter Master, or SWO, OOD qulaified officer type.
Calling on all who have stationary compasses to check them now. Report back findings!
I have one stationary marked where it points North all the time. It's off to East by 6 degrees right now!
