[quote:Jessica6:MV8xMzQxMzI2XzIyMDcwNDQwX0U3NjQyRDAw] [quote:Intentionally Blank] [quote:Anonymous Coward 1222416] I'm just trying to avoid Chinese products and it's near impossible. I buy a lot of kitchen things & appliances at Goodwill just so I won't put the First Dollar in their pockets, but help American pockets right here.
I totally agree with that. We're trying to do the same here. Buy from small local suppliers, barter, get stuff from charity (thrift) shops... you get better stuff, a lot of older household goods are of outstanding quality. Got a brilliant stew pot yesterday from the local junkyard fro practically nothing. Would've cost me a fortune in the shops. Keep it in the neighbourhood, if you can.
You know, I sometimes hope the economy will seriously tank to 30s Depression levels because it seems it may very well be the only way the majority will again demand durable quality over cheap disposable crap. I wish it wasn't like that. I can't stand clothes shopping any more because of the bad cuts, lousy fabrics and shoddy stitching. There's a strange smell on a lot of the clothes too - don't know if it's the shipping packaging or something else but I'm almost back to just making my own. I get most of my kitchen stuff second hand, or I buy the higher-end quality. My mother drilled into me as a kid that you pay more for a decent item up front you pay less in the long run because you don't have to replace it as often. Environmentalists waste so much time forcing us to use CFLs as opposed to bulbs that were manufactured here but don't give a crap about the absolutely dreadful levels of pollution in China. There's a website called chinahush that has photos and so on. There's going to be a major health care crisis in that country in a few years. The core of the problem is the race to the bottom - low worker pay, no safety or environmental standards, just whatever is cheapest so the guy at the top can get more.
My charity just spent a small fortune on some useless Chinese cr*p that wasn't fully assembled and contains some unknown liquid which looks corrosive and lethal.
I saw there is a long list of dangerous products produced by the Chinese, who don't seem to give a sh*t whether they're poisoning babies, puppies or just general members of the public:

Apparently 66% of all identified dangerous products entering the EU came from China in 2010, and they expect that percentage to rise to around 70% in 2011:

The importers are to blame too, not doing proper checks and making it harder for us to identify country of origin:

Products such as coffee sachets with added milk products may contain Chinese whey powder products (to be avoided at ALL COSTS), but show the as the country of origin the point where the product was packaged, which may be different.
HERE'S A BARCODE 'READY RECKONER' WHICH MAY HELP YOU TO IDENTIFY AT LEAST SOME CHINESE PRODUCTS:

AT LEAST THEN YOU CAN MAKE A (SOMEWHAT) INFORMED CHOICE...
I've got nothing against Chinese people individually. I know quite a few and really like them. But the Chinese manufacturers need to get the message that the sort of shoddy, dangerous products they are shoving out are simply NOT OK.
