It shouldn't dive like that from a tiny CHS.
we see it dive like that many times when a large CME hits. the sharp dive we see on the magnetometer and electron flux is from a sharp rapid compression of earths magnetosphere caused by the arrival of solar particles, such as in a CME like here http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~immel/october_2003/mag_3d_200310302112.gif The rapid, near instantaneous compression of the magnetopause was detected by magnetometers on the GOES satellites here is the link on that one http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~immel/october_2003/ http://www-istp.gsfc.nasa.gov/istp/events/2000july14/mag_3d_200007142212.gif http://thewatchers.adorraeli.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Rob-Stammes-CME-feb.14-2012_1329256653_med.jpg here is one from Jun 17 2012 http://geo-seismic-labs.org/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/201206162115UT_goes_mag1.png looking on Spaceweather for the day, we see this report "GEOMAGNETIC STORM ALERT: A geomagnetic storm is in progress in the wake of a double CME impact on June 16th. The hit, which strongly compressed Earth's magnetic field, lit up both poles with bright auroras. Stephen Voss sends this photo from Southland, New Zealand:" http://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=17&month=06&year=2012
Thank you NiNz - I was expecting,as all were,a clipping from those Eruptions but didn't expect to see such a sudden dive - I have seen the same from other CME impacts where both readings went off the scale and +250 -50 had to be included - Just did not in any way really expect such a sweep! Hugh had this one down quite well if you look a few pages back - It is a combo CME/CH :hf: Thank you for clarification NiNz. Awesome photos by the way(never seen you outside of here before, life looks luvly) :sun::hf:
neither did i! i was kinda thinking that we might have missed the hit because it was getting late into the 20th and thank you for the compliment :)
No problem on the compliment - I held back a little to be honest. But,yes,it does look luvly : ) If this is not just the CH Arrival but CME as well,is the CME not a little early,a little-little? '.Forecast... The geomagnetic field is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels for days 1 and 2 (20-21 Mar) as CH HSS effects are observed. Late on day 2 (21 Mar), forecasted CME effects from the 17 March filament eruptions are expected to increase geomagnetic activity to quiet to active levels. On day 3, (22 Mar), expect quiet to unsettled conditions as CME effects begin to wane.'http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/ftpdir/latest/forecast_discussion.txt It could have been helped along by the CHS I suppose, the Magnetometer at present is showing a continued dive(though small so far and nothing like the initial bump that made me jump a few Minutes backhttp://www.swpc.noaa.gov/rt_plots/mag_3d.html : ) I freaked for a moment when I saw only one registered reading, and one so steep in decline, lol :hf: :sun:
We have just had another huge X flare measuring at a X8.2 originating from sunspot 2673
On September 11, 2017
[

]
ALL flares recorded ARE Earth facing regardless of where the sunspot is located
-----------
CME FROM X9 HAS ARRIVED!
Issue Time: 2017 Sep 07 2242 UTC
WARNING: Geomagnetic Sudden Impulse expected
Valid From: 2017 Sep 07 2255 UTC
Valid To: 2017 Sep 07 2330 UTC
IP Shock Passage Observed: 2017 Sep 07 2229 UTC
On September 6th we have had 2 X flares! A X2.2 at 09:10 utc & a secend larger flare just a few hours later of X9.3 at 12:02 utc. There is a large widespread Earth directed CME associated with this latest X flare as we can see here

An update as to the arrival time of this CME will be added once all data has been reviewed.
The X9.3 flare is the 14th largest X flare ever recorded!
On September 4th we had 7 M flares from fast growing sunspot 2673, with at least 1 large dense Earth directed CME. This CME will arrive late in the day on Wednesday September 6th.
There is now a 25% chance for X flares over the next 24hrs & 71% chance for M flares
We have a Long Duration M2.4 Solar Flare starting
01:05 UTC July 14th 2017
There was a full halo CME observed with this solar flare. The associated CME is Earth Directed. See discussion on the last page for all updates!
