Coast Guard: Sludge is likely sediment
NEW ORLEANS — The Coast Guard said tests show that a miles-long patch of sludge floating in the Gulf of Mexico is likely caused by river sediment.
The Coast Guard tested the patch Sunday and found only trace amounts of petroleum. A news release says the substance is believed to be from sediments brought down the Mississippi River.
The investigation began reports came in Saturday of an oil sheen.
The Coast Guard also said it was investigating reports of an oily substance washing up in Grand Isle and other areas nearby. Samples are being tested, but the substance isn’t believed to be from last year’s massive BP underwater oil gusher.
