The government has instructed Fukushima Prefecture to halt shipments of broccoli and 10 other vegetables, and has told consumers in the prefecture not to eat 10 of the products, excluding turnips, as radiation levels far beyond legal limits were detected in them. The government has also told Ibaraki Prefecture to stop shipments of parsley and unprocessed milk.
The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry announced early Wednesday morning that
radioactive substances at levels exceeding provisional limits set by the Food Sanitation Law had been detected in broccoli, spinach, turnip, cabbage and seven other vegetables from Fukushima, and in unprocessed milk and parsley from Ibaraki.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan instructed Fukushima Gov. Yuhei Sato to halt shipments of the 11 vegetables, and instructed Ibaraki Gov. Masaru Hashimoto to stop shipments of unprocessed milk and parsley, in accordance with the Nuclear Disaster Special Measures Law....
