The crust or outer layer of the Earth is made of a number of plates which move. The plates are called Tectonic Plates. Active
volcanoes
are found where these plates meet.
Earthquakes
are common in these places too. Continents, like
Australia
and
Africa
ride on these tectonic plates because they are made of lighter material called continental crust. It is lighter than the plates. As the heat from the Earth's molten zone builds up under this crust the land cracks and stretches so that eventually large land masses drift apart from each other. In this way Pangea began to break up about 1200 million years ago.
"Adams has made video animations that graphically illustrate his hypothesis, in which new mass is created by a hypothesized electron/positron pair production process within the core of the Earth."
