Former prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu will formally announce his candidacy for the Likud leadership on Tuesday and will call on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to publicly state that he will not quit the Likud and form another party if he loses the Likud primary.

Sharon met with his closest advisers over the weekend and reiterated that he intended to run for the Likud leadership.

His advisers said that Sharon would consider forming a new party if he lost the race, but they vigorously denied a report in Yediot Aharonot that Sharon said he would divide the Likud and support Labor chairman Shimon Peres to stop Netanyahu.

In an effort to rebuild support in the Likud, Sharon will meet later this week with key Likud activists, and he may also meet with former residents of Gush Katif. Netanyahu is planning election rallies, a press conference for Tuesday, and he will visit Ra´anana on Monday to campaign for his political ally, Ra?anana mayoral candidate Uzi Cohen.

The chairman of the Likud central committee, Minister-without-Portfolio Tzahi Hanegbi, will meet on Sunday with Sharon and Netanyahu to try to reach a compromise date for the primary. Hanegbi will also try to persuade Sharon to rule out the idea of forming a new party, and will ask Netanyahu to stop trying to topple Sharon.

Netanyahu said on Saturday night that he would not interfere with the efforts of Likud members to force the Likud central committee to convene to set a date for the primary. The Likud´s high court will meet on Monday to decide whether to force Hanegbi to convene the committee.

"Former prime minister Netanyahu will not cooperate with the undemocratic steps of Sharon and his cronies," Netanyahu´s spokesman said. "Instead of trying to flee from the will of the voters as he did with the Likud referendum, he should stand before the voters and attempt to defend his policies."

Sharon´s associates said they wanted the primary to be held as late as possible and predicted that it would not take place until January. Netanyahu´s advisers said he wanted the primary as soon as possible.

A Dahaf Institute poll published in Yediot on Friday gave Netanyahu a lead over Sharon, 42 percent to 35%. The same poll found that Netanyahu would lose to Peres by 8% in a general election.

Labor will convene its executive committee at the party´s Tel Aviv headquarters on Sunday to begin the process of preparing for its primary, which is expected to be held on November 8, three days after the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. Labor candidates denied a report in Ma´ariv that the primary could be canceled and all the candidates could unite around Peres as Labor´s candidate in the general election.

Labor leadership candidate Amir Peretz called a press conference for Sunday morning, during which he is expected to announce that he favors holding the Labor race as soon as September. He is expected to say that the polls indicating that Netanyahu will be the Likud?s candidate require Labor to elect its candidate as soon as possible.
