I checked my common cosmic ray chart this morning (http://neutronm.bartol.udel.edu/spaceweather/welcome.html) and saw nothing unusual or strange to cause the sudden spike. I know that in SO's daily 3-min news, he has a different link that shows gamma ray bursts.
