It's supposed to be the cheap and safe way for internet-based companies to outsource data.

But Amazon's much-vaunted cloud network took a big hit yesterday when it crashed, taking a host of web 2.0 companies

The rare phenomenon came on the same day as the massive PlayStation network went offline after an unexplained outage, which officials say could take another day or two to put right.

Sites across the U.S. went offline for up to 12 hours yesterday as Amazon's northern Virginia data centre was hit by a series of outages.

websites, including location-based website Four Square, news aggregator Reddit and Twitter client Hootsuite change.org and many more ,all went down.
