Original Message When it finally launches, maybe on Monday, Endeavour will be carrying an Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. This device will purportedly be verifying the existence of dark matter in the universe.
The device uses 2.5KW of power and will be attached to the ISS. What's the point of it all? Apparently it has similar properties to the underground particle accelerators such as CERN - "Both use strong magnetic fields to deflect the particles, and arrays of silicon plates and other sensors inside the detectors track the particles' curved paths."
Whereas CERN collides particles at up to 7 TeV, the AMS will be dealing with the collision of cosmic rays at 100 million TeV.
Could it be a weapon? There would be no problem with radiation anyway, it would be like the target never existed..
A weapon that could be used on us or on incoming comets/asteroids.. USAF have apparently been funding research into antimatter weapons since the end of the cold war.
