News Conference in Menasha, WI re missing Lori Depies

* * * * *

The alleged murderer travelled all over the midwestern USA to attend Civil Warn Re-Enactments and sometimes Auto Shows. If you've had somebody go missing, see if there was a war re-enactment or car show the week prior to the disappearance.

Convicted child kidnapper Larry DeWayne Hall, a longtime suspect in the 1992 disappearance of Laurie Depies, has admitted abducting and killing the Appleton woman, The Post-Crescent has learned.

Hall, 48, of Wabash, Ind., who is serving a life sentence at a federal prison in North Carolina for the 1993 kidnapping of an Illinois girl, acknowledged his involvement during an interview with Town of Menasha and state investigators in November, they told the newspaper.
The revelation, by far the strongest lead in Depies' disappearance, could bring a conclusion to one of the most enduring mysteries in Fox Cities history.

Police confirmed to The P-C last week that Hall encountered Depies, 20, while she was working at Fox River Mall in Grand Chute on Aug. 19, 1992, followed her car to her boyfriend's apartment complex near the former Valley Fair Mall in the Town of Menasha, lured her into his van, abducted her and left the area. Authorities said he was in the Fox Cities for a Civil War re-enactment.

"He gave us quite a bit of information about our case that was never publicized," said Town of Menasha Police Lt. Mike Krueger, who described Hall as the prime suspect in Depies' disappearance.

Krueger declined to provide specifics about Hall's description of what happened after Depies was inside Hall's van, and he refused to disclose whether any efforts are in the works to search for remains.

"We have this new information and we're concentrating on it," Town of Menasha Police Chief Rod McCants said. "We've got an individual who has admitted involvement in her disappearance, and what we're doing now is trying to corroborate information that he's provided us."

McCants said the case isn't advanced enough to seek charges from the Winnebago County district attorney's office.

Hall, a stocky man with a full beard and short hair, eventually told the detectives that he purchased a T-shirt from Depies at the Graffiti store at Fox River Mall on Aug. 19, 1992, stalked her from a distance throughout the day and then tracked her down as she left work that night, driving to meet her boyfriend at his Town of Menasha apartment.

After following her into the Wilson Avenue apartment complex parking lot where her 1984 Volkswagen Rabbit later was found, Hall lured Depies to his van by claiming there was a flaw in the T-shirt he had purchased, Krueger said. Hall told police he then whisked her away from the scene, killed her and disposed of her body.

In the Illinois case, Hall was convicted of kidnapping 15-year-old Jessica Roach as she rode her bicycle in a rural area near Georgetown, Ill., a short distance from the Indiana border. Hall was arrested a few months after her decomposed remains were found in an Indiana cornfield. His arrest was based in part on complaints from other young girls that he had been stalking them.

Authorities think Roach died by strangulation. Hall told investigators he placed two linked belts against her neck and around a tree, pulling on both ends from the other side of the tree so he would not have to watch her face as she died.

Krueger said, however, some details of the Depies case were withheld from the public, and Hall provided information that only the killer would know.

In April 2010, one of Hall's childhood neighbors, Christopher Hawley Martin, published "Urges," suggesting that Hall may be responsible for killing or abducting about 40 women, nearly half of whom have never been found.

Krueger and former DCI agent Dick McSherry traveled to Springfield, Ill., in 1995 to learn more from the FBI about Hall and the items seized from his house, vehicles and barn.
They were shown one large storage room "filled with clothes from floor to ceiling — women's clothing, girls' clothing," Krueger said. "It was everything from undergarments to pants to shirts to shoes to purses."

Despite all the items, Skorlinski, who replaced McSherry as regional homicide investigator in 1997, said authorities have not "come up with any unknown DNA to link him to any of these missing people."

Mother's anguish in Laurie Depies disappearance lingers

Nearly 19 years have passed since Laurie Depies seemingly vanished into thin air.

Today, Depies would be 39 years old — a fact that both astounds and saddens her mother, Mary Wegner.

"It's mind-boggling," she said.

Wegner refuses to view Depies as a 39-year-old woman. She thinks the age-progression photos of her daughter make her look like a businesswoman — an image that doesn't fit.

"In my mind, she's always 20 years old," said Wegner, who lives in Winneconne. "That's how I picture her."
