They were on L.S.D. and one of them thought it would be a great idea to make a song out of the letters.

So they came up with the most occult meaning possible:

Lucy in the Sky (Lucifer lives on the Moon)
with Diamonds (he has a hoard of diamonds)

Am I right? or am I right?

haha, just a thought that popped into my head. Wouldn't doubt it to be true with the Truman Show symbolism and all the theories of the Moon being a satellite. Wouldn't it make sense that the King of the Underworld is ruling the planet from the Moon with all the Rubies and Diamonds to himself!
