As the Republicans’ two appointees to the vice president’s debt limit negotiations pulled out of the talks earlier today, House Speaker John Boehner maintained that Republicans are opposed to any tax increases and called on the president to “engage” in the discussions in order for lawmakers to strike a deal ahead of the administration’s August 2nd deadline.

“Several weeks ago after we were all down at the White House, our entire conference, when I said that if we're going to meet the president's timetable to come to an agreement by the end of this month, that he needs to engage. And if we're going to meet that timeline, the president is going to have to engage,” Boehner, R-Ohio said. “I know the frustration that [Cantor] feels when Democrat members continue to want to bring tax hikes into this conversation, and insist that we've got to raise taxes on the American people, and I think Mr. Cantor made it clear that these conversations could continue if they take the tax hikes out of the conversation.”

Earlier Thursday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor announced that he is pulling out of the debt limit negotiations led by Vice President Biden because the group has reached an “impasse” over the Republicans’ opposition to raising taxes that can only be broken by the president.

“As it stands the Democrats continue to insist that any deal must include tax increases."
