Chief executive of News International Rebekah Brooks tonight hinted that there were worse revelations to come and told News of the World staff they would understand 'in a year' why the title had to close.

During a meeting with despondent staff which lasted almost two hours, she made a thinly-veiled reference to as yet undisclosed 'revelations'.

Many had expected her to resign during the meeting. Instead she sympathised with the 200 or so staff who had been told they had lost their jobs, and promised to do her utmost to find them positions elsewhere in News International.

As her minders lurked in the background, she added that she was not going to quit, not going to be arrested and that there were not yet plans in place for a Sunday Sun.
