[quote:Anonymous Coward 1149306:MV8xNTY0NDEzXzI1ODUzMDM1XzRCMkY0MDdG] [quote:mike 1404503] [quote:Anonymous Coward 1149306] Ships disappear over the horizion because the Earth is round. If you go higher they reappear. You've obviously never been near an ocean. The opposite coriolis effect seen in hurricanes in different hemispheres shows the Earth is round. Orbital mechanics only works because the Earth is round. If the Earth was flat as you claim you would see a hypothetical flight from Australia to Madagascar take the path following the black line hereand would fly over India http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x458/mlewis77/f_tempm_bd2a646.png But in reality because the Earth is round they take the shorter red or yellow great circle paths shown here http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x458/mlewis77/f_tempm_d4aa0a7.png One can determine the distance to the Moon on their own with geometry. Or they can use HAM radio equipment and use Earth-Moon-Earth bounce communication and figure out the distance with the delay and the speed of light. Both methods show a distance much further than a few thousand miles. Seismic readings from Earthquakes and how they propagate around the world show the Earth is round.
no...you could fly in a curve a little to the right and you would miss india altogether and remain over open water
So you ignore most of the post and give some nonsense about a slight curve to avoid India? Do you see the VAST difference in the lengths of the paths? If the Earth were flat the shortest path would go over India and NORTH of Australia. Since the Earth is really round the shortest path is thousands of miles away and SOUTH of Australia. What about the rest of the post?
