In the USA and most of the civilized world it is illegal to own or import elephant tusks. This is in hopes of destroying the market for ivory. But there are loopholes. For instance, Americans (and Europeans) pay somewhere btwn $10 and $50K to travel to Africa, pay the guide, the Park and the Country where the elephant lives in order to shoot and kill an elephant. Doing it this way, and having the proper paperwork allows the ivory to be imported to the hunter's country of origin.
Chinese and other Asians (Chinese especially though) are drooling over ivory. Nothing says: "I have disposable income and you DON'T!" like owning a big piece of carved ivory.
It is estimated that more than 50,000 african elephants are being killed each year in order feed the demand for ivory. There's somewhere around 500,000 African elephants left. In 10 years, maybe 15 or at best 20 years there will be no wild African elephants left.
All because of the ivory trade.
20 years ago, for the most part, the ivory trade had been eradicated. Westerners had been educated that demand for ivory was depopulating the animals and the appeal was curbed. Chinese demand though has boomed.
Here's an American showing his dick works by hiding and shooting an elephant. Notice his guide is also armed and fires to take down the elephant because the American and his dick are a bit too afraid to trust 1 shot on a creature of this size. After all, no American (or Euro or Chinaman) should have to DIE to kill an elephant!
An excellent article from this month's Vanity Fair: [link to www.vanityfair.com]
