I was too young to get caught up in BEATLEMANIA but recently had my own Beatlemania (reading all I could about them, buying their music, films, etc.)
While I certainly appreciate their talent and contributions to the world of music and even to the evolution of society, I find them as individuals to be spoiled- ASSHOLES!
That's my opinion, based on my personal research about them.
Basically, John Lennon was the tortured genius. In actuality he was a nasty bit of work-cruel to just about everyone. He seems to think the world owed him.
Paul McCartney was the master-musician. All things considered, he could have pretty much been The Beatles all by himself (he even said as much in a Circus (rock magazine) article shortly after their breakup. Paul was self-centered and very stingy (with money and giving dues to others.)
George Harrison was all about the money and second only to Lennon in his disdain toward "bothersome" fans.
Ringo Starr let his less-than-stellar-talent evolve into an ego for compensation. Often times attempting to demonstrate his "greatness" with larger-than-life failures (like gutting the Apple Corps Bldg to create a Film Scoring Facility on the roof, which when all was said and done, basically, created a lot of unemployed workers and of course the facility never completed. Worse the unemployed workers never compensated.)
Perhaps, the saddest fallout of all things BEATLES, was the people along the way that helped "make" The Beatles, were never dully appreciated much-less properly compensated. This includes workers and family.
With al their "fame and fortune" The Beatles never "shared" with the others.
Mal Evans was The Beatles go-to-guy (rumored to have conceptionalized the bulk of Sgt. Pepper) was pretty much tossed aside after the Beatles breakup. Down & out in LA he ended up being shot-down by LAPD over a simple misunderstanding. Dead (and destitute) not one Beatle attended his funeral or offered to help out with the expenses.
Apparently, over the years Mal had collected things like The Beatles' guitar picks, combs, scraps of paper with lyrics, etc. souvenirs; his family tried to auction them to help their financial situation but BILLIONAIRE-BEATLE Sir Paul McCartney put a stop to it! He said the "stuff" belonged to the Beatles (bearing in mind, those people often went far & beyond the call of duty for the sake of The Beatles and were never-ever properly compensated for their efforts-then and apparently not now either!
Again, The Beatles (most especially Paul McCartney) are real assholes!
Obviously, my opinion is a broad-swipe based on my limited information but as a fan that's pretty much all the "access" I have so it is what it is.
The Beatles were/are the greatest rock and roll band ever but they're also perhaps the biggest pricks ever too!
Paul McCartney worries more about being thought of as second-fiddle to John Lennon instead of being remembered as "fair" (and caring.)
Trust me Sir Paul, as far as legacy goes, your talent speaks for itself-you're equal, if not a better musician than Lennon.
What you should focus on, is "not" being perceived as a "self-centered-tightwad!" Because, as a fan, your talent is obvious to me but what concerns me is your personality-are you the kind of guy I would sat down in a pub with and down a pint or the jerk-off I wouldn't even give the time of day to?
In other-words, do I care enough about you as an artist to properly support you?
To some, this "artist-to-fan-relationship," can be huge- (maybe even the difference in them going out and buying your music as opposed to simply downloading it from a torrent or the like.)
Fans matter McCartney!
And we hate pricks!
Remember Sir Paul; Mick Jagger is his own best fan (and apparently, his own best friend too-according to his band-mate, Richards!)
