[quote:Anonymous Coward 1349884:MV8xNTkxMDg2XzI2Mjk1Mjk0XzYwNzIwRTcw] Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has reportedly made his choice for the three Democratic Senators to sit on the Catfood Commission II: Patty Murray (WA), Max Baucus (MT) and John Kerry (MA). Additionally, Murray is expected to co-chair the committee -- officially named the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction -- along with a still unnamed House Republican. A spokesman for Reid did not respond to a request for comment. Reid’s decision to tap Murray will likely be met with scrutiny, as she is also chairing the Senate Democrats’ campaign operation for the 2012 election cycle. But she is also a member of leadership, a senior member of the Budget Committee, and a woman on what is likely to be a male-dominated committee. It could be worse. For instance, Kent Conrad or Joe Manchin (who lobbied for the position) or Mark Warner would be worse, from the standpoint of protecting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid or raising taxes on rich people. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/08/09/1005126/-Reids-reported-picks-for-Super-Congress:-Murray,-Baucus,-Kerry Reading that last paragraph I think I threw up a little in my mouth. Speaker of the House John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have announced their selections of Republicans to staff the "Super Congress" mandated by the debt limit deal, and neither Budget Committee chairman Paul Ryan nor any freshmen members were chosen.
Boehner appointed House Republican Conference chairman Jeb Hensarling of Texas to be the co-chair opposite Washington Senate Democrat Patty Murray, as well as two committee chairs: Ways & Means chairman Dave Camp and Energy & Commerce chairman Fred Upton, both of Michigan.
From the Senate, McConnell chose Jon Kyl of Arizona, Pat Toomey of Pennsyvania, and Rob Portman of Ohio.
Of the six Republicans named to the committee, only Toomey voted against the debt ceiling bill. None of the senators chosen were members of the Gang of Six who have already been working on similar issues for months.
