The following is an evacuation order issued by the City of Nome Emergency Operations Center:

EVACUATION ORDER

The most recent weather update shows seas building to 15 feet by midnight and an accompanying storm surge of 7.5 feet resulting in a combined wave height of 22.5 feet at roughly 5 feet above the seawall, likely resulting in standing water and waves on Front Street.

Businesses and residents on the south side of Front Street, residents that live in low lying areas, Lower Belmont, Prospect Place, West F Street, Port Road, and along the coast [of] West Beach are strongly encouraged to evacuate by 6pm this evening [Tuesday, November 8].

This evacuation order is expected to remain in effect for 48 hours.

They get storms like this EVERY year or worse and never have evacuated before according to someone I know living there.
