Why do most people still cling to the fairy tales of religion?

Ir seems no matter who I talk to, they seem to still desperately cling to their belief in false deities and mystical space santa clauses granting them wishes, even though it makes ZERO sense on EVERY LEVEL. The indoctrination of people by these false, illogical, ridiculous, small minded, and spiritually stagnating concepts of religion are hard for people to snap out of. They WANT to believe in judgement, etc. I am fascinated at this. Why do people desperately cling to these fairy tales, praying to saints, false deities, mother mary statues, etc?
Their common sense and logic goes straight out the window and there is no talking to them about the other possibilities that await in the afterlife. Do you know people like this, who will not open their mind to the deception that is religion. Please discuss.
