[quote:Esoteric Morgan:MV8xNzUzNTIzXzI5MDgyMDkyX0VGQThDRUU3] Great thread. How I missed Huxley's books is a mystery, but then, I went to catholic school...perhaps they only wanted us to see the fear side of things (i.e.:1984.) Last spring I finally got an android phone. To may dismay, I immediately got to see just how devious the bugger is. Google's world has charmed users into interconnecting every facet of their lives in the fluffy-cloud topping of a grand data-mining scheme. Try to save a youtube video or link to facebook if you don't agree to sync your accounts...won't happen. The system is designed to give you 'everything' your heart desires--as long as you sign away your privacy. Perhaps I might have softened, had I not realized that on this very convenient android, google seach results seem to have become terribly stingy in the info it provides you. Being an avid and clever researcher of info on my pc, it also became immediately evident that someone is choosing what they perfer you find. So, I desist. Probably doesn't matter, but, for me it's become a matter of principle. Stubborn, am I? Can't help it. Blame orwell. In a thanksgiving conversation with my younger tech brother, he basically told me I was nuts, that these sync thingys were 100% private and safe. Not what I expected to hear, and, not at all believable. Why would I want to have my bank and credit accounts--and their passwords--on my person, in a world where anywhere I go, someone can 'grab it' just by my being somewhere they can read it? Am I being overly cautious here? Which led me into a very short conversation with my 21 yr-old son shortly thereafter. I was exclaiming how in "1984" Orwell portrayed a time when, against our will, TPTB would know know everything you say or do, yet, here we are, in 2011, eagerly doing this of our own volition...thrilled to be so connected, and, happy to post updates to the world what we are doing, eating, planning, feeling and thinking. He laughed, and walked away. Means nothing to him. He loves the idea of depositing a check into his account by taking a pix and pressing 'send.' He looks forward to using his phone at the checkout. After all, IT IS the modern world. Even though I've paid ALL of my bills online for years, I am very careful about security issues. As far as this phone, though, I really have much less control than i'd like. So, I can see how desensitized we have become. Instant grats rules the day. I like some of that, but, it must be within reason. Ha! Thanks for the thread, and the great links it has led to. [/quote]
