Original Message GULFPORT -- The fatal shooting of a chained pit bull by a Gulfport police officer in Decemberwas justified under the circumstances, police Cmdr. Chris Loposser said.

Loposser announced the decision after the completion of an internal investigation. He did not identify the officer Thursday, but said the dog was on a 30-foot chain and acted aggressively when police approached the front door of a home on 20th Street.

“The officer was acting in self-defense of another officer’s well-being,” Loposser said.

The police department requires an internal investigation when an officer discharges a firearm.
