Howdy doomers,
Help me decide if this is the next big adventure I take in life.... I think this could be an amazing opportunity and considering I am 28 years old, i dont think i will have much time left to undertake such a journey if i dont do it soon.
I am considering purchasing a refurbished airstream motor home and living in it permanently for a few years in order to make it economically feasible. I make about 55k a year right now, do not own a home (i rent), do not have kids, and have a job with great benefits.
It looks like for around 20-30k you can get an amazing airstream with modern upgrades like this....
Obviously this is pretty kickass. This particular model is an Airstream 345 on a 1986 P30 Chevrolet truck chassis with 454 gasoline engine and Turbo 400 3 speed automatic transmission.
My grandparents have a nice property i could legally park this thing on and hook up to their electric/water system. My thought is i could get an auto loan, move out of my apartment and live in this baby fairly comfortably for a few years as i used what i currently pay in rent to pay this thing off pretty fast. Since this thing is already all metal on the outside I am curious if I built some copper cages that bolt on around the windows, could i turn this into a perfect faraday cage to protect the sensitive electronics installed inside? I wouldnt want one that had vintage AC/electronics etc just because i wouldnt want to deal with all the repairs and hard to find parts this would require.
There are some people that restore these to factory condition (down to the fabric) but those are VERY expensive and really just showroom pieces. Many others install more modern parts like pumps, circuitry etc etc. These would be susceptible to a solar flar/emp. Not to mention i would also have computers/hard drives/etc etc inside as it was my home.
I think this would be a reasonable project to make this thing completely EMP proof with some simple welding and grounding it with a huge steel spike. Of course this would also give me the opportunity to install a few of my own upgrades for other potential SHTF scenarios and give me a large vehicle capable of transporting my extending family far away from the cities. With large fuel/water tanks already built in and the capability to tow a small trailer with more this could easily have a 2k mile range on it without stopping for gas as well.
Am i totally crazy here? I mean well obviously im crazy i post on this site but man this seems like it could be a LOT of fun. I would be able to vacation very cheaply to top it off. just take a week off and hit the open road. My mind is already reeling with the possibilities like installing solar panels on the roof, box gardening along side it, adding roof access, man it doesnt end. so i am just looking for reasons why this would not work.
I guess some major draw backs would be regular trailer life stuff (never done this). Living inside a 35 foot home, short showers, limited storage and others. If anyone has personal experience would love to hear it. This is obviously a higher end option but within a couple years im sure i could manage to own this free and clear and either go back to renting or start working on an actual home with some serious credit building behind me.
anyway, flame away. i am looking for you guys to convince me this is stupid or i am going to do this for sure.
