To remove a search engine: Click on the logo of the search engine with the arrow pointing down (it's on the upper right hand side for me) -> click "Manage Search Engines..." -> choose an engine from the list and click "Remove" (bottom right) To add a search engine: Depends on the particular search engine. Some have a plug-in for Firefox, some don't. Startpage however has. You can download it from here https://startpage.com/eng/download-startpage-plugin.html
In recent times we have been told that Google intends to change its policies regarding sharing information it collects on us.
Naturally this is an untennable and totally obnoxious concept to our valued privacy.
Even Microsoft according to a side heading on todays GLP's main page..the third of Feb 2012, have very publicly criticized Google's intentions, with a heavy advertising campaign, and rightfully so.
Fortunately there is a simple cure that will circumvent this intrusion, all you need to do is to copy and paste the following into your existing browsers "Start Page"
I use IE, so I can only vouch for its use there and it appears to be functioning perfectly.
Here it is...
