[quote:Mr. Miracle 10364049:MV8xNzc2ODAwXzI5NTE3NDAzX0Y1RDI5QTg2] So, again, confused person states that this country was never meant to be a "christian" nation. That statement is true, as far as it goes. But the fact is always missed that our founding fathers ALL believed in a higher power, a CREATOR, who endowed we the people with our rights. Rights that should never be ascribed to a secular government. The idea of "separation of church and state" that everyone throws out when the subject is raised never came from the Constitution. It came from the Federalist Papers, written after the ratification. Yes, I know, everyone will talk about the "mormons", the "christians", the "jewish people", the whatever. All these names putting the screws to everyone, making the name the product, not the message. This country was started with the idea that all men (using the term to mean all of mankind) are created equal. If men do not or have not lived up to that ideal, including the Founding Fathers, that simply means that we all fall short of the ideal set by our Creator. That does not mean we should throw out the ideal. By and large, if you believe in a Creator, that usually means that you have some sort of moral code, which, if adhered to, will guide you through life. I think that was what the Founding Fathers wanted, a moral country. Instead, we have allowed the dilution of our moral codes to spread to every aspect of life, and we are all the poorer for it. That code was well understood by the people of that time, so they did not include it in their business dealings, of which the Constitution certainly was. If you look at all of the papers, letters, and writings of the time, there is no shortage of references to religion. [/quote]
Original Message
The original
Constitution
of the United States that was ratified in
1789
had only
one reference to religion
:[Article 6]
No religious Test shall ever be required
as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.
The
de facto
motto
of the United States, adopted as part of the Great Seal of the US by an Act of Congress in 1782, was
E. Pluribus Unum
(Out of Many, One).
Congress
changed it 174 years later
(1956) to "In God We Trust."
The
original
'Pledge of Allegiance'
was written in
1892
by Baptist Minister Francis Bellamy who
DID NOT INCLUDE
the words
"Under God."
Those were added by Congress 62 years later (1954).
The
U.S. didn't issue Paper Currency until 1861
and
'In God We Trust didn't appear on it for 96 years (1957).
Just after the
Red Scare in the 1950's
,
CONGRESS
CHANGED
the
Pledge of Allegiance
and our
Nation's Motto
over the
FEAR
of
COMMUNISM
.
In a time
when fear is traded like a commodity
and the word
SOCIALISM
is being used to
create the same fear as
the old word
COMMUNISM
, lets
REMEMBER
that our country was
NOT
founded on fear
.
NO
OUR NATION was
founded out of HOPE
for a better world where
all people were EQUAL -
that we were
ONE from MANY.
Let's not let
fear
change our nation's great tradition & direction
again
.
