This earthquake was located in the southern part of Algeria (Sahara), a region without any serious recorded historic seismic activity. Due to this fact and because of the focal depth of ONLY 2 km, we think that this earthquake will have a volcanic related origin.
The southern part of Algeria is volcanically marked. There are three large volcanic fields. The Tahalra volcanic field is the closest to the epicenter, at a distance of only a few kilometers from the epicenter.
There were no historically recorded eruptions, but investigations of lava flows show that they are younger than 10.000 years.
Inhabitants of Tamanrasset who felt this earthquake expressed their feelings that this quake might have a volcanic origin...
