Do some research and reading up on the various levels of sleep, including REM sleep - that level where you dream. I remember reading that you're supposed to progress down through various levels of relaxed brain activity before REM kicks in. If for some reason you immediately go to the REM level, the body will "jolt" itself back. It's happened to me before. And it is a perfectly normal response. But it sounds like you're letting these episodes give you anxiety, which leads to insomnia. Also watch what you eat and drink one hour before you go to bed. Some foods and liquids are stimulants, which you also do not want.
Your analysis of the different stages of sleep really makes sense! It also makes me wonder if I really should do a sleep study! Hmmmm...I'm so glad I found this thread. Op, how long has this been going on?
A sleep study is a good idea. They can also check to see if you suffer from the condition known as "sleep apnea".
