After 137 days, a cost of almost £600,000 to the taxpayer and the resignation of two senior clerics, the St Paul's anti-capitalist camp was removed today in only two hours and 17 minutes. Riot police and bailiffs swooped shortly before 1am to evict the protesters, arresting 20 people.
By 3am the camp that had blighted the landmark since October was gone and the council began a "deep clean". St Paul's issued a statement of relief but claimed the "Occupy London" protesters had taught them a lesson.
It said: "In the past few months, we have all been made to re-examine important issues about social and economic justice and the role the cathedral can play. We regret the camp had to be removed by bailiffs but we are fully committed to continuing to promote these issues through our worship, teaching and institute."
The protesters - removed by hundreds of officers and bailiffs amid shouts and minor scuffles - vowed to continue the Occupy movement and return to St Paul's every week. Spokesman George Barda, 36, said there would be a general assembly on the steps tonight. "The court ruling does not prevent us gathering here - it was just about the tents."

But my real question is, what's the significance of the number 137?
Coincidence?
