[quote:shadasonic:MV8xNzk5MTAyXzI5OTE2OTc4XzlGNTA4QjlE] When the sun creates sunspots they sometimes coincide with solar storms, flares ,cmes, filament eruptions. Sunspots are indicators of hugely intense magnetic fields beneath the suns surface. Chaotic particle motion causes a twisting and turning of the mag. field creating whiplash like effects releasing plasma. If earth facing, these storms interact with our magnetic field, the magnetosphere. Depending on the relative orientation of the two fields, two things can happen. If the fields have the same allignment, they slip around one another. In the worst case scenario, when the field of a particularly energetic solar storm opposes the earths field, things become a little more interesting. The magnetic field of the plasma opens up a hole in the earths field, and particles surge through. The results can be minimal with some cool borealis lights or more devestating with a highly energetic storm hitting an open field causing power outages, satellite disruption or increased quake potential as the particles heat our core. NOAA forecasters estimate a 55% chance of additional M-class flares and a 5% chance of an X-flare during the next 24 hours. Solar activity is picking up.
Activity has been very slow the last 2 or 3 weeks...This SS has got some potential no doubt...Here is another link to SDO...Click on "data" and the "Kiosk" movie..Great website
