Since the 5.8-magnitude earthquake last August 23rd in Virginia, there has been a rash of aftershocks in excess of magnitude 2.0.

The North Anna Nuclear Power Station sits about 11 miles from the epicenter of the 5.8 mag quake near Mineral, VA.

A shallow (7.8 km depth) 3.1 magnitude aftershock from last summer’s 5.8 mag earthquake occurred at 11:21 p.m. EDT on Sunday March 25th, This aftershock was centered 13 km (8 miles) south southwest of Mineral, VA.

The aftershock caused a reported magnitude 3.1 seismic event near the North Anna Nuclear Power Station that was felt in the station's control room.

After the tremor was felt in the control room, the Unit 1 reactor at the station declared an “Unusual Event” and submitted a report.

No damage was discovered in an inspection that was conducted after the aftershock. Therefore, five hours after the event the Unusual Event notification was terminated.

Still, a plant inspection is ongoing to determine any plant issues related to the seismic event.

Questions that linger include the following:

Why, if no damage was discovered after the aftershock was felt at the nuclear power station is there an ongoing inspection to determine any plant issues that are related to the seismic event?

Did any news stations run a story on this Unusual Event that occurred at the North Anna Nuclear Power Station?

Given that the aftershock occurred late evening on Sunday the 25th, why was the Unusual Event (event report) not registered on the RSOE EDIS website until today (Tuesday, March 27th) at 03:30 a.m. UTC?

Why, exactly, is the 3.1 mag earthquake that was centered south southwest of Mineral, VA being assumed to be an aftershock of the 5.8 mag earthquake that occurred in Virginia last summer?

Why isn't the 3.1 mag earthquake of March 25th being considered as a foreshock of a stronger earthquake that has yet to hit the area?
