[quote:Anonymous Coward 13417752:MV8xODI2Mzk3XzMwNDI3NjQyXzhEQjdCNDA=] Hm, I do think in a way work was meant to be a big part of our lives. And I certainly wouldn't just wan to be a moocher off of other people's backs. It's not like animals have grocery stores you know, and there's a reason we don't let them go in there and just haul off a piece of steak either... But they work for their food in their own way. We are meant to as well. However, our work was meant to be: - fulfilling (at least somewhat) - only part of the time The problem with these jobs like working as a computer programmer in a cubicle for a 12 hour day 5 days a week, which, after you account for travel, errands, chores and sleep, is pretty much your life right there, is that it's so far removed from the work that we would enjoy. Even breaking your back farming all day felt more satisfying than sitting in a grey cube all day inputting meaningless nothing in a hurry to meet meaningless deadlines so the company can make even more money... (Well, (I'm sure there are some people who just LOVE computer programming... but not for 12 hours a day every day... I guess there are even some who also don't have any home life, they WANT work to be life... but I don't think that's healthy, they're avoiding life.) For the rest of us, we need: - Fewer hours of work (Not for more hours of TV, but for more hours of quality life: hobbies, travel, friends, family... all that) AND/OR - Better quality work. (NOT as in paycheck, but as in something you really love, even if it maybe pays less) So GLPers, how do we do that? Some ideas: - Part-time. Are you finding yourself shorter on time than money? Even if not, maybe there's a way you can cut down on your spending, and live a simpler life. Life was supposed to get easier as technology advanced, not harder, so why are we working longer hours than ever? Why does everyone have to work full time (plus overtime for a lot of people)? Part-time might be enough to get you the money you need to go out and live your life. - ENTREPRENEURSHIP! Be your own boss, do what you like, set your own hours. Of course, it's not easy... but if you have the mindset for it, it's... awesome. Ok, there's gotta be more than two ways to do this thing. I guess some people buy a farm and live off of it? So that's another then... - Self sustainable farm Umm, - Find one thing you're really good at that can make you a lot of money quickly, do it like crazy, and then retire and live simply so that you can stay retired permanently... whether it's a pop song or lacrosse or an app or being the world's first flame-throwing harpist... What else, people? [/quote]
