Original Message For those who aren't familiar with me, I have never posted a thread that had anything to do with racial issues in America. Feel free to check my entire thread history. I live in Tucson Arizona which doesn't have much of a black population and is mostly white and latino. I haven't really even followed most of the recent threads here talking about the Zimmerman / Travon situation or the other racial issues threads but something happened to me today in the grocery store and I wanted to share my experience along with a snippet of an article I just read. I am 100% white, not mixed race and could really care less what race anyone is. I judge people by the way that they act or as famously said, "by the content of their character". I would definitely not consider myself to be racist in any way and have a great deal of friends who are latino and even a few black friends albeit not many of them live in Tucson. We never argue about racial issues even when discussing illegal immigration or other subjects that some people like to use the excuse to blame on race. I'm sorry if this post is somewhat long but realize it's my story and also a snippet of an article. Anyhow this is what happened..

Today I went to my local Safeway near where I live. It's in a mostly upper-middle class suburb of Tucson. I only purchased 8 items that I needed for dinner tonight and made my way to the check out. There were 4 lanes open and one of them was an "express 15 items or less" line. In each line except the express line there were only 2-3 other people checking out their groceries. Nobody had a full cart of groceries and things seemed to be moving along. There were 2 people in the queue for the express line and as I was about 10 feet away from "being in line" this black woman and her husband came around the corner pushing a shopping cart that was OVER FLOWING with food. They were fairly well dressed in nice enough clothes. They saw that I was making my way to the express line and the woman started pushing her cart toward the express line very quickly. She almost ran into the woman at the back of the line who had to jump out of the way in order to avoid being hit by their very heavy cart. By the time this happened I was less than 5 feet from the line. The woman looked me and gave me a nasty smirk as if to say "ha ha I got here first". I noticed that all of the food in their cart was total junk food. I'm talking hot dogs, white bread, candy, soda and other very cheap crap food. I can understand being poor and not being able to afford healthy food because I have been in that situation before myself but their cart was almost over flowing with junk. They were also dressed in fairly nice clothes as well and their appearance was not of someone who was economically struggling.

I was in a hurry to get home in order to meet a friend of mine who had been driving all day to come over and have dinner with me so I very politely asked the woman if she could move to one of the non express lines. When I said this she just glared at me as if I had just insulted her or something but did not say a word. Then she turned to her husband and said "can you believe this jerk? he wants to cut in line!". The checker in the next lane over as well as in the express line both saw and heard what had just happened and were looking at them in disbelief. The lane next to the express line only had 3 people in it and would have taken less than 10 minutes for these people to be helped. The checker in the next lane stopped what he was doing and asked the woman and her husband to please come over to his lane and allow me to get in line.

Again the woman just glared at him and this time the husband laughed at him and they just stared forward pretending not to have heard the request. By now the manager at the customer service desk noticed what was going on but was busy with a customer. By now the checker in the express line was helping the woman that had almost been hit by their cart and she asked the couple to please move to the next lane explaining that her lane was for customers with 15 items or less. This seemed to really piss the woman off and she got very angry and literally yelled at the checker "I got here first, you need to help me next!" so loud that the entire front of the store could hear.

By this point I was considering just giving up and moving down to the next shortest line. Normally I am a very non-confrontational person and would rather avoid conflicts with people but the way they were treating the employees really pissed me off. I shop at this store quite often and was familiar with both of the checkers. I know their names and they know mine. So I decided that I was going to take a stand.

Before either of the checkers or the manager could say anything I calmly but firmly said to the woman "ma'am you almost ran the woman in front of you over in order to get in front of me with your over flowing cart of food. This is an express lane and I am in a hurry to get home to meet my friend. Could you please move so that I can just get my shopping done and go home?"

This is when the situation got out of control. The woman's husband seemed to be embarrassed by this point and he was now standing behind his wife. The woman however was not going to back down and she started screaming at me. She said quite a few things, I don't remember everything because she was talking so fast that it was difficult to understand everything she said but this was the gist of it..

Woman: "Who do you think you are asshole! I was here first! How dare you ask me to move so you can cut in line?!"

Me: (Again, calm and not in a raised voice) "Ma'am both of the checkers asked you to move and you refused."

Woman: (screaming again and now the entire front of the store is staring at her) "Fuck you asshole I'm not moving! Get away from me or else!" At this point she turned around, grabbed her husband and shoved him towards me as if she were telling him to protect her from me.

Realizing that the situation was beyond insane, I shook my head and backed up a couple of steps. The woman's husband decided he was going to start being macho and stood there facing me to block my way as if I were going to attack his wife. (LOL WTF!)

By this time the manager came over with a store security officer. They told the woman that she was violating store policy and being rude to their employees and customers. He then politely said that he would be happy to take them to an empty lane to assist them.

Instead of resolving the situation the woman got really mad and started yelling at the manager saying that he was being unfair and that they should be able to use any lane they wanted and that the only reason he was hassling them was because they were black and that he was just being "a racist mother fucker."

At this point I could tell the manager was getting really pissed off. I don't think he wanted the situation to escalate anymore and by this point the woman in the express lane had just finished helping the woman in front of them so he came over and told her to take me to an un-used isle to help me.

I took my basket to the newly open lane where the woman checker apologized to me and I told her that it was ok because I thought they were being very rude and thanked her for helping me. I didn't really hear much of anything else from the woman and her husband by the time I left the store but this was an experience I have never had before in this city but will not soon forget.

I didn't really want to write all of this and definitely don't want to start up another thread of people calling each other racists and arguing but after what happened I felt that it was important to share this experience with the rest of you. I have been reading a website I recently discovered and when I got home noticed a new article that upon reading it seemed very familiar to what I had just went through. Again, please read the entire article and I think you will see just how the situation is similar to what I experienced.

Race-Baiting in the Era of Obama

Alas, racial tension in this country is not new. What is new is having a president who, for political gain and selfish ideological reasons, is instigating a racial divide that has not been seen for decades. In order to ignite a passion in his base, Obama is intentionally taking this country back to the Civil Rights Era, when violence in the streets was commonplace. But a black person in America in 2012 has every civil right that a white person has -- and then some. Affirmative action has led to black people actually having an easier time accessing certain schools, jobs, and positions of higher authority. (The exception to this seems to be if you want to work on Obama's re-election campaign.)

In the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin shooting, this country is facing a shocking eruption of black hatred of white America. While we expect the likes of Al Sharpton to crawl out from under their rock and ramp up the hateful rhetoric whenever a race-baiting opportunity arises, we do not expect the attorney general to publicly praise Sharpton "for your partnership, your friendship, and your tireless efforts to speak out for the voiceless, to stand up for the powerless, and to shine a light on the problems we must solve, and the promises we must fulfill." In a healthy society, in which the president does not carry racial biases that impact his judgment and ability to function effectively, Obama would denounce Sharpton for the agitator that he is. Obama would take to the teleprompter and condemn all calls to violence, asking for rational minds to prevail.

But we are not a healthy society any longer, for our leaders revel in resentment, and our citizens are divided. We are divided because we have a president who is angry and hostile, juvenile and racist, ideological, narcissistic, and power-hungry. He would rather call police officers stupid when they arrest a black friend than call for civility and calm in the face of public servants doing their job regarding Trayvon Martin's death. The community organizer-in-chief knows well how to stoke racial tension, class warfare, and violence if they will lead to an extension of his power and the transformation of the beacon on the hill for all who strive to succeed in the land of opportunity.

The Obama administration's empowerment of black rebellion began at the very start of his presidency, has grown exponentially since then, and can be seen in all sorts of machinations across the country. The visceral reaction in the black community to the Martin case and the silence from the Justice Department in the face of bounties being placed on George Zimmerman's head, calls for violence by the New Black Panthers (who learned in 2009 that they are immune from prosecution when Holder dropped all charges against them), and mobs taking to the streets are all indicative of what this country will continue to face without the rule of law being enforced -- and encouraged -- by the government.

In the face of the NBP's threats of violence to Zimmerman, Zimmerman's family called on Holder to explain why these militants are getting away with rhetoric that likely constitutes a hate crime. Holder's response was the praising of Sharpton. The NBP's response to Holder's inaction has been to prepare for the next stages of the "race war," including plans to be "suited, booted and armed" and to announce that a "new reality" and "true revolution means some blood shed ... you'll have to cross the red sea ... cross some blood[,]" all in order "to lead to the destruction of the devil's society ... that blond-haired, blue-eyed, sometime brown-eyed Caucasian walking around[.]"
