Original Message Well it looks like a wolf might be out of the picture. Any ideas on best all around guard dog, protective dog, and family/pet friend?

I see german shephards listed as one - funny that I see some shephard breeds in pure black, pure white coats... anyways, how about other breeds that you have experience with, and why you would suggest it?

Also, is it better to travel to a breeder or look for a local one? Things to look out for, consider, etc.?
