The editor knew a story like this, would be latched onto by the MSM and then get hyperboled into the stratosphere.

Sorry,  but there is no such thing as journalistic integrity anymore.  The Publisher of the newspaper is up for a position in the Obama Administration and did not want to make black people look bad.
