South Alabama may be too warm; we're at the bottom edge of Zone 8. Thanks for the information.
Bald cypress looks similar. A Mexican version of bald cypress called Montezuma cypress is a little bit more evergreen and grows faster. I have both in my backyard. I also have Bald-Montezuma cypress hybrids developed by Chinese scientists. We don't even do that here in USA despite the face they are native to North America! Dawn Redwood is native to China! Anyway, they are growing hybrids over there by millions! http://sfagardens.sfasu.edu/UserFiles/File/PLANTS/Taxodium%20breeding%20brochure%20feb%2020100.pdf
it is ancient. once thought to be only a fossil, a few were found in china. now it is making a slow comeback!
i seriously just bought 30 seeds on amazon for a DOLLAR!
it likes acidic soil and lots of water. will even grow in standing water!
my soil is acidic and i have a marsh in the back so i am going to plant mine there.
the trunk can grow to 100 feet wide! such a gorgeous tree!

go get some seeds if you live in a place that can grow them. they are the fastest growing coniferous redwoods second only to the redwoods of california.
they can get to be 100 feet tall
