Freemasons open doors to dispel secrets The Port Lincoln Freemasons lodge has opened its doors to the public for one of the first times, hoping to erase the notion that it is a society full of secrets. 0 Port Lincoln residents got the chance peer inside the door of the Freemasons lodge this week, as past master of the Port Lincoln branch Brian Bascome toured them around the building. Stepping inside the lodge ceremony room, a room rarely opened to non-Freemasons, Mr Bascome explained that Freemasonry derived from a group of historic stonemasons, and their contemporary meetings drew on the symbols of this craft. "We have symbols that represent the morals of Freemasonry, and these symbols are the working tools of a stonemason: the likes of the spirit, the level, the plumb rule, the square, the compasses." He said the Port Lincoln lodge was founded in 1898, and men in professions ranging from truck drivers to lawyers and shop keepers had taken part in the 'classless' Freemason society. "It's a group of men that believe in a supreme being and have a common interest in life, which is based on strict morals and a betterment of life." He said as the number of Freemasons declined it was important for them to open up, and dispel the 'myth' that the group was full of hidden secrets in order to attract the next generation of Freemasons.
