ASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Senate passed a ban on the sale of potentially deadly synthetic pot known as Bath Salts. The law was passed by the US Senate as part of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act which has been championed by Sen. Charles Schumer.

"Let this be a warning to those who make a profit manufacturing and selling killer chemical components to our teens and children: the jig is up," Schumer said.

"This bill closes loopholes that have allowed manufacturers to circumvent local and state bans and ensures that you cannot simply cross state lines to find these deadly synthetic drugs."

According to the New York Daily News, the bill was held up in the U.S. Senate by Kentucky Senator Rand Paul. However, New York Senator Charles Schumer was able to get the bill passed by attaching it to a Food and Drug Administration bill.

The bill passed 96-1 in the Senate, and will prohibit the sale of synthetic drugs, known as “bath salts” or “herbal incense.” The bill now moves to the House of Representatives.

Schumer said he expects the ban to be headed to President Barack Obama by July 4 to sign into law.

“The increased use of bath salts has ruined many lives and is growing as a destructive cancer in some of Delaware’s close-knit communities,” U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) said late last year.

"I’m proud to join my colleagues in introducing this amendment, which will call for a coordinated effort between federal and state governments to keep dangerous new hallucinogenic drugs off our streets. This legislation will make Delaware safer by providing our law enforcement officials with the resources they need to fight the growing abuse of bath salts.”

Most bath salt drugs contain MDPV, or methylenedioxypyrovalerone, although there is no telling what you are getting when you are buying from a head shop. As they have been packaged as household items not for human consumption, the makers have been able to skirt laws for quite a while now. The effects of the drug include extreme agitation, paranoia, hallucinations, chest pain, as well as suicidal thoughts or behavior.

Zombie Apocalypse Spreads Across Internet

Meanwhile, as laws are passed banning bath salt drugs as well as other synthetic drugs like Spice and "fake marijuana," the Internet has become fascinated with the terms Zombie Apocalypse as well as Bath Salt Drugs. The terms have exploded as popular search trends on Google.

While there have been quite a few incidents reported this year of strange attacks - including Rudy Eugene eating the face of another man in Miami, Florida - fears of an actual zombie apocalypse may be exaggerated. Still, the problem of bath salts and other synthetic drugs is real and may spawn an actual infestation of "zombie-like" creatures that attack.
